Bishop John Sperry

Bishop Sperry is a Second World War Veteran of the British Royal Navy. Since immigrating to Canada in 1950, he has served parishes in Kugluktuk and Fort Smith. As a memoir of his ministry work in the North, Bishop Sperry has authored the book, Igloo Dwellers Were My Church. Upon retirement, Bishop Sperry has been instrumental in helping other Veterans in the Northwest Territories and is Chaplain of the Rangers Division of the Joint Task Force North. He regularly visits the Territorial Stanton Hospital, as well as Veterans living at home or in long term care facilities throughout Yellowknife. Bishop Sperry is a sought-after speaker and used to travel extensively in the North to fulfill this role. He is available every Tuesday at his local Royal Canadian Legion branch #164 where he has been known to offer counselling to his comrades. In July, 2002, Bishop Sperry was named to the Order of Canada. He is an example of an individual who is dedicated to the care and comfort of his comrades.
