Mr. Bishop and his wife Marie McInnis have been providing outstanding assistance to Veterans in the community and at Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building since the early 1990s. Mr. Bishop, whose brother is a Second World War Veteran, has been a fraternal member of The Royal Canadian Legion since 1958 and an associate member since 1990. Over the years, he has held several positions on the Branch Executive, including secretary, training officer, poppy chairman and service officer. He has also served on several committees within the Branch and Legion Zone 14, including serving as a Camp Hill Veterans' representative. In recognition of his dedicated service to Veterans and their families, he was awarded life membership in 2006.
Together, Mr. Bishop and Ms. McInnis are actively involved in the Friday Camp Hill Council, ensuring Veterans are able to attend and return safely to their rooms and organizing lunch, audio and room set up. They travel to Camp Hill Memorial at least three times per week, volunteering their time to help Veterans in a number of ways: assisting Camp Hill staff during holidays and festivities; bringing Veterans to local Legion branches for visits, to commemorative events and parades at the cenotaph, to dinners and social events such as picnics and fishing trips, and to medical appointments and shopping trips. They bring special treats such as homemade cookies, deliver Christmas dinners and fruit baskets and make hospital visits to Veterans in need. They organize Remembrance Day services and parades, as well as cenotaph services throughout the year. They even established a bursary for children of Veterans.
