A Korean War Veteran with more than 28 years in the Canadian Forces including several peacekeeping missions, Mr. Chiasson has served in several Branches of The Royal Canadian Legion. He has been Service Officer of the Sydney Branch No. 12 of the RCL for many years and is involved in the Cape Breton Comfort Fund, which is currently engaged in efforts to reduce rents for seniors. As former Service Officer for Branch No. 32 in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia, Mr. Chiasson visited Veterans in hospital and at home, delivering Christmas cards and gifts, always ensuring that their needs and concerns were adequately addressed. In addition to his present responsibilities, Mr. Chiasson serves on several committees, including Chairman of the Sick and Visiting Committee, Chair of the Poppy Campaign Committee and Meals on Wheels. As Chairman of Renovations for Branch No.12, Mr. Chiasson renovated two kitchens, thereby enhancing their catering operations to Veterans during Legion functions held at the Branch. Mr. Chiasson renovated other utilities and built a large display cabinet to store flags and house the Branch's official Colours. As the Branch's Chairman and Liaison Officer for the No. 2 Sea Cadets and the Navy League of Canada in Sydney, Mr. Chiasson regularly visits the Cadet Corps, and through this vehicle, remains fully engaged with Canada's youth. In recognition of his outstanding service to Veterans, Mr. Chiasson received the Meritorious Service Medal from the RCL and was appointed as Honorary member of the Naval Cape Breton Veterans Association.
