Ottawa, Ontario
For 35 years, Dave Brown used his unique reporting talent to bring the stories of ordinary citizens and the less fortunate to the pages of the Ottawa Journal, and later to the Ottawa Citizen. He has been true to his belief that what most people want to hear about is the lives, challenges and successes of other people. A caring individual, Mr. Brown has over the years made significant efforts to assist Veterans in distress by contacting Veterans Affairs Canada and ensuring that they received appropriate care and attention.
Mr. Brown has participated in numerous Veterans Affairs Canada pilgrimages including the Netherlands 50th, Vimy 80th and the opening of the Juno Beach Centre, where in addition to conducting many interviews with Veterans, he also aided Veterans Affairs Canada staff in obtaining the necessary media equipment.
Mr. Brown won the National Newspaper Award for best column in 1992. The Royal Canadian Legion presented him with a "Special Media Award" in 1997 for his attention to War Veterans issues and in particular a series on the Battle of Vimy Ridge won him a special "Media Award". He has been instrumental in bringing to the fore the remembrance of the sacrifice, contributions and achievements of Canadian Veterans.
