Devin Castilloux has brought remarkable ingenuity, youthful energy and great enthusiasm to the cause of remembrance. Three years ago, he visited Sunnybrook Hospital to interview Veterans and he began to collect stories about the First World War, the Second World War and Korea. This experience motivated him to do more to remember the service and sacrifice of Veterans.
In his second project, Devin set out to collect the signatures of Veterans on a Canadian flag. Beginning at Sunnybrook, he has taken his flag across the nation to meet Canada’s Veterans who have proudly signed on. His project includes the signatures of 75 Canadian Forces members who are serving in Afghanistan where the names of five soldiers killed in action were added by their comrades. Devin’s outstanding work has been recognized by the Royal Canadian Legion who awarded him a Medal of Excellence. Thanks to his sheer desire, unrelenting commitment and his ability to connect with Veterans, at the tender age of fourteen, Devin Castilloux has ensured that the memories of our Veterans will be preserved for future generations of Canadians. He stands as a excellent role model for Canada’s youth in his dedication to the cause of remembrance.
