Vancouver, British Columbia
A recipient of the Victoria Cross for exceptional gallantry during the Italian Campaign of the Second World War, "Smoky" Smith was a remarkable ambassador for Veterans. After leaving the Canadian Forces in 1964, Mr. Smith selflessly offered his services to his country, becoming an outstanding advocate for members of the Canadian Forces and Veterans. He became an invaluable and enormously effective Remembrance Ambassador. He represented Veterans with distinction during many overseas pilgrimages and at innumerable commemorative ceremonies held across Canada. Mr. Smith was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion and is consistently sought out by media for his willingness to share his experiences and his sense of humour. He took special pleasure in opportunities to meet students and share the message of Remembrance with them. His exemplary service to the nation has also been recognized by membership in the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada.
