Edward Howlett

St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador

From an early age, Mr. Howlett was told stories of his great uncle, Robert E. Howlett, who was killed in action during the Second World War. In order to ensure his great uncle was never forgotten, Mr. Howlett, together with his father and grandfather, arranged to have a grave marker installed at the Howlett family plot. Over the years, Mr. Howlett's keen interest and determination led him to research and locate several more unmarked graves of local Veterans. Since 1993, Mr. Howlett has been a member of the Cemetery Committee in Goulds, and has worked hard to ensure that 16 unmarked graves were maintained and provided with appropriate markers. He also oversaw the establishment of a local "Field of Honour" and the "Garden of Angels," in St. Kevin Cemetery. Mr. Howlett designed and arranged the donation of a granite altar, bench and peace memorial. In 1997, as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Mr. Howlett made the arrangements to have a granite bench donated to the Petty Harbour War Memorial site. He was also successful in arranging for a dedication ceremony to have the Goulds By-pass Road renamed in honour of his great uncle, Robert E. Howlett.
