Mr. Smith is a Second World War Veteran who served on D-Day. He has been an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion since 1945. Over the years, Mr. Smith has been of a member of several Legion committees including 14 years with the Poppy Campaign. In 1985, he became the founding member of The Royal Canadian Naval Association's Admiral Murray Branch and served as president. Since that time, Mr. Smith has chaired the committee responsible for organizing the annual Battle of Atlantic ceremonies in New Glasgow, Pictou County. He organizes the memorial service and table for past members at the Association's annual Charter Night supper. He also served as a lay chaplain for many years at memorial services, at the funeral homes in Pictou County, as well as for services conducted at sea. Mr. Smith has received The Royal Canadian Legion's Diamond Jubilee Medal and a certificate of meritorious service. He is known as a generous volunteer, always looking after the best interests of the Veterans of Pictou County.
