Garnett Turner

Mr. Turner is a Second World War Veteran who served in the Merchant Navy. He has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 55 years and has served on branch committees, taking on important roles such as branch service officer. He was also chairman of the History Committee which produced a history of Branch 9 celebrating their 50th anniversary. Along with other Second World War Veterans, Mr. Turner helped to establish the Lt. Col. E. W. Johnstone Branch No. 9 Legion Home in Kensington, Prince Edward Island and shared duties as branch manager for several years. He is currently working on their 75th anniversary celebrations. Mr. Turner compiled a presentation on all war memorials on Prince Edward Island. He was chair of a committee which gathered names to be inscribed on a local war memorial. When the memorial was dedicated, more than 1,800 names were engraved, and names continue to be added. In 2006, Mr. Turner, with the help of others, traveled around the island to capture photos of its memorials, in order to complete a display he started years ago. Mr. Turner has written a book on the 7,000 Prince Edward Island First World War Veterans, and is currently researching and compiling a list of all Second World War Veterans from Prince Edward Island, as well as those who served in the Korean War, and peacekeeping missions. Mr. Turner received the Meritorious Service Medal from The Royal Canadian Legion in 1998.
