Mr. George "Popsy" Burrows is a Second World War Veteran who has been an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch for more than 59 years. He has been on the Poppy Committee for more than 30 years and served as Campaign Chairperson for two years. Mr. Burrows is a recipient of the Royal Canadian Legion's 50 and 75 year medals and is now a Life Member. He also received Brampton's Citizen of the Year award in 1997, the Peel Board of Education Outstanding Service Award, the Canada 125 Anniversary Medal and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. Deeply committed to supporting remembrance ceremonies, Mr. Burrows has played the "Last Post" at events in his community for more than 50 years and performs the ceremonial piece at local churches, cemeteries, assemblies, nursing homes and at his own Legion Branch. Over the past 35 years, Mr. Burrows has visited close to 30 schools where he speaks to groups of up to 300 students about his wartime experiences and the significance of the Last Post during ceremonies. When Mr. Burrows is not busy promoting minor hockey or Old Timers' lacrosse, he can be found volunteering his time by driving patients, many of whom are Veterans, to medical appointments. Mr. Burrows also graciously volunteers his time entertaining residents at the Tullamore Nursing Home.
