Mission, British Columbia
A former middle school teacher, Mr. McAvoy realized that many students did not fully understand the importance and significance of Remembrance Day. More than five years ago, Mr. McAvoy initiated the "Remembering Project." He is the coordinator of this project where he continues to collect interesting artefacts, period vehicles, and interactive displays which are included in an annual Veterans' Week event. Mr. McAvoy arranges for Veterans to speak with the youth and ensures there is opportunity for students to view a film or play related to our military history. The project is extremely popular with school children and teachers. In conjunction with the City of Abbotsford and the City of Chilliwack, Mr. McAvoy arranges for security guards, transportation, relief support for teachers and ensures teachers are on site for the week. This personal project has become known as the Canadian Military Education Centre. It has grown from an annual one week event for schools to a year round museum open to the public and schools.
