Mrs. Henderson served briefly in the Canadian Armed Forces. Upon leaving the Forces, Mrs. Henderson became ill and required a lengthy hospital stay. She was impressed by the support and care provided to her by a visiting Legionnaire. This inspired Mrs. Henderson to become a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. She volunteered for Committee work and within a short time was elected to her branch executive. The committee that was most meaningful to her was the Hospital Visitation Committee. Mrs. Henderson has spent countless hours with patients, knowing from firsthand experience, how uplifting these visits can be. Mrs. Henderson has progressed through the various levels of the Legion, involving herself in Branch, Zone, Command and Dominion levels. She volunteers every year for the Poppy Campaign and has been active in youth programs. Mrs. Henderson also volunteers as Secretary and Colour Flag Bearer for the Lower Mainland Colour Party. She has served on the New Chelsea Housing Society Board of Directors and with Veterans' programs at the George Derby Centre. Mrs. Henderson served on the Remembrance and Observance Committee of the City of Vancouver, planning the restoration of the historic cenotaph. She is a recipient of the Royal Canadian Legion's Meritorious Service Medal, the Canada 125 Medal and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. These recognize her exceptional volunteer work in the community.
