John Burke

Truro, Nova Scotia

A Second World War Veteran, Mr. Burke has been a very active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26 for the past 28 years. He is currently serving as Service Officer, Welfare Officer and he is a valued member of the Poppy Trust Fund. Mr. Burke’s knowledge of Veterans Affairs’ programs and processes for which Veterans and their dependents can access pension and benefit entitlements is immeasurable. Dedicated to the care and well-being of his comrades, Mr. Burke organizes Remembrance Day ceremonies at four local nursing homes each year and he helps to ensure Veterans are in attendance for special events throughout the year. Until recently, Mr. Burke sang with the Legion Lyrics Choir which performed at numerous hospitals and nursing homes. In addition, Mr. Burke volunteers his time for many fundraising activities at his Legion Branch including serving meals and working yard sales. He visits local school children during Veterans’ Week and he also assists the Widow/Widower’s Association. As Chairman of the Sick and Visiting Committee, Mr. Burke spends nearly every afternoon visiting hospitals, nursing homes and shut-ins. He has initiated meetings to raise awareness of the programs offered by Veterans Affairs Canada and he has often acted as a liaison between the Veterans and the Department.
