A Korea War veteran and former writer, broadcaster and commentator in Winnipeg, Mr. Gillis has been an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion for more than 40 years. During this period, Mr. Gillis has held most branch executive positions, as well as serving as service officer at various Winnipeg legion branches. He has served on numerous fund-raising committees, the Legion Colour School, and the Joint Veterans Housing committee. Mr. Gillis is also a member of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada (ANAVETS) and the Korea Veterans Association of Canada (KVA). He has been a member of an Advisory Committee for Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), representing ANAVETS and the KVA. Mr. Gillis has provided much assistance to veterans in obtaining the benefits to which they were entitled. Over the years, he has participated in parades, colour parties, and has taken part in numerous annual speaking engagements during Veterans' Week. Mr. Gillis is the recipient of numerous awards, medals and certificates including the Queen's Jubilee Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, Community Service Awards, and the Governor General's Certificate of Appreciation. Mr. Gillis was also presented with the Leadership Award as Veteran of the Year 2002, from Deer Lodge Centre. Mr. Gillis was one of two veteran members on the Board of Directors for seven years. In addition to volunteering for veterans' causes, Mr. Gillis has volunteered for the Multiple Sclerosis Society (MS) and the Winnipeg United Way.
