Mrs. Lafortune is actively involved in assisting Hong Kong Veterans and has been since the late 1960s. She helps Veterans and their wives by taking them to the hospital or to the local Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) office. In the late 1990s, Mrs. Lafortune helped to form the Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association, which assists Hong Kong Veterans and their wives with any problems they may be experiencing. She visits Veterans in their homes or in the hospital. Mrs. Lafortune helps with applications to the DVA on the behalf of Veterans. She organizes social gatherings with the wives of Hong Kong Veterans in order to foster a continued sense of community among them. Mrs. Lafortune takes the lead in organizing the Annual Hong Kong Veterans Reunion, which is held in October every year to commemorate when Veterans left Winnipeg for Hong Kong.
