Mr. Karel Spykerman has been a volunteer with Canadian Veterans for over forty years. For much of this time, Mr. Spykerman has served with The Royal Canadian Legion, including sitting on the executive as the president of his local branch for seven terms, along with many other positions throughout the years. On top of his work with the executive, since he began volunteering with the Legion, Mr. Spykerman has consistently assisted Veterans with housing, food, medical issues and any other difficulties they were experiencing. Mr. Spykerman has also helped with the Ladies Auxiliary and with the branch kitchen, serving meals to Veterans and family members. He also continues to help out during Remembrance Day functions and other events. For thirty-five years, Mr. Spykerman has helped raise money for The Poppy Fund and has volunteered as an honour guard and pallbearer. Since 1995, Mr. Spykerman has also been a volunteer at the Forest Grove Nursing Home and has generously given his own time and resources to take Veterans and other seniors to medical appointments and out shopping. On top of his volunteer work with Veterans, Mr. Spykerman volunteers with a children’s group home in the area.
