Major (ret'd) Edmund (Ted) R.M. Griffiths CD

Ottawa, Ontario

A veteran of the Italian Campaign during the Second World War and a veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Griffiths is secretary of the Three Rivers Regiment Veterans Association and chairman of the Ottawa branch. He was one of the main organizers behind the successful Dinner of Reconciliation which took place in December 1998 when a group of Canadian veterans of the Battle of Ortona once again met their wartime opponent, the 1st German Parachute Division, for a Christmas dinner. The spirit of reconciliation, strengthened by the dinner, continues to this day.

Under the guidance and planning of Mr. Griffiths, the funds remaining after the Dinner were used to design a statue named "The Price of Peace," which was unveiled in Ortona in October, 1999. Mr. Griffiths was also the driving force behind the newly created Battle of Ortona Museum - Museo Della Battaglia di Ortona. The museum features artifacts which provide a unique perspective on the Battle of Ortona and the Italian Campaign.

Mr. Griffiths' ongoing efforts and commitment over the years in keeping alive the contributions made by Canadian veterans during the Italian Campaign serves as an outstanding example to all. His exemplary service during times of war and his dedication to remembering his fallen comrades will inspire future generations of Canadians.
