Mr. Henry Francis Verschuren

Brampton, Ontario

Mr. Verschuren served in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Reserve from the late 1970s to the mid 90s. He is currently the Director of Music Emeritus for his regiment, the Lorne Scots. Mr. Verschuren is a Life Member with more than 45 years of volunteering with his regimental association, contributing to the welfare of both current and previously serving members. He is in his fourteenth year as an ordinary member of Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Branch 15 (Brampton), where he has held the position of parade commander. In this role, he has engaged the community to participate in Remembrance Day ceremonies, and has helped establish candlelight vigils and new memorial services for Vimy Ridge Day and Veterans of Foreign Service. He contributed to the unveiling of a Veterans statue and memorial book, and he spearheaded a project to add “Afghanistan 2001-2014” to the Brampton Cenotaph. Mr. Verschuren has composed/arranged original music, directed, and produced annual concerts at the Rose Theatre in Brampton entitled “An Act of Remembrance.” All proceeds from the performances are donated to the band performing and to the RCL for the benefit of Veterans. Mr. Verschuren is a regular speaker at area cadet corps, schools, and retirement homes. As a litigation law clerk, he has also worked on a pro bono basis for members of the local RCL.

Mr. Verschuren has also received the Long Service Award in the 35+ year category from the City of Brampton in 2014, and is currently working on a project that will see monuments celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Lorne Scots be unveiled in Brampton, Oakville and Georgetown in September 2016.
