Calgary, Alberta
Mr. Nick Twyman has been a strong advocate for Veterans for the past ten years. Following a 2007 incident in Afghanistan involving his friend Captain Trevor Greene, Mr. Twyman founded a Veterans’ fundraiser at The Royal Canadian Legion called “Liquid Courage” to raise money to aid in Captain Green’s recovery. In 2008, the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre (CMFRC) became the beneficiary of the fundraiser which features Mr. Twyman’s band “Sweet Potato.” The fundraiser, now renamed “Hearts of Courage,” has become a primary fundraising event supporting Calgary’s military families and Veterans. “Hearts of Courage” is held annually on the second Friday of the Calgary Stampede. In 2011, Mr. Twyman joined the board of directors of the CMFRC and soon after became its chair, a role he remained in until February 2015. The CMFRC focuses on the many issues that affect the families of Canadian Armed Forces members. Mr. Twyman also joined the board of directors of the Military Museums Foundation in 2014 and was appointed as board chair in February 2015. This foundation raises money to educate young Canadians about the achievements and sacrifices of Canada’s Veterans. Mr. Twyman was also a primary benefactor in funding the creation of two commemorative paintings for the 41st Combat Engineer Regiment in recognition of two significant achievements by two of the regiment’s Veterans during the Second World War in Italy.
