Private (Ret’d) Donald Thomas Leier

Private Donald Thomas Leier is a Veteran of the Korean War nominated for his many years of dedication to the Veteran community in Montgomery Place.

A member of the Korea Veterans Association of Canada for many decades, he has been very active in honouring and remembering the sacrifices of his brothers in arms. Although he did not speak of his personal experiences, he was always available to speak with the local youth on the importance of remembering. He was a leader in Scouting and also ran a local hang-out for teenagers at the skating rink to keep kids out of trouble in a rough and tumble neighborhood. His contribution was constant for over 55 years.

On 11 November 1996, he and a few friends gathered to pay their respects at the Montgomery Cairn. In the following years, he helped build this small gathering into an event attended by more than 500 Veterans, civilians, dignitaries and clergy.
