Mr. Desjardins served in the Primary Reserve in the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps from 1957 until 1964. He has been a public servant for over 35 years. In 1998, Mr. Desjardins began his Veteran-related volunteer work with the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre as a Legionnaire. He was elected director of the Foundation Board in 2007, vice-chair in 2008, and board chairman in 2010. In his current positions as Past Chair and Director, he continues to play a key role in fundraising initiatives. Through his involvement, millions of dollars have been raised in support of the long-term care Veterans’ facility, which is home to 250 residents. Mr. Desjardins has also been a committed member of the Royal Canadian Legion since 1997. He was president of Branch 593, Bell Corners, founding President of Branch 641, Barrhaven, and has served as Service Officer. Mr. Desjardins’ servant leadership has been instrumental to the success of poppy campaigns, the ROH (Operational Stress Injury Clinic) and the Rehabilitation Clinic at the Ottawa Hospital.
