Robert Rideout

A Veteran of the Second World War with service in the United Kingdom and Italy, Mr. Rideout has been an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion since its evolution from the Great War Veterans Association in 1949. As Sergeant of Arms of the Grand Falls Branch, Mr. Rideout was instrumental in raising the Branch's colour party to "soldier standards," and as a result of his efforts, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Mr. Rideout was elected Branch President in 1992, and was awarded the Palm Leaf for masterminding the renovations of the Branch. Mr. Rideout was subsequently appointed to the Veterans' Services Committee of the Newfoundland and Labrador Command, with special responsibility for the Exploits Memorial Veterans' Pavillion of Botwood. Under his leadership, the committee became effective in getting improvements to the grounds and the building housing the pavillion. Although he has endured some health set-backs, Mr. Rideout continues to serve as a member of the Veterans Services Committee for the Veterans Memorial Pavillion. Mr. Rideout continues to be called upon to comfort terminally ill comrades during their final hours - much to the appreciation of their family members.
