Mr. Bird retired from the Canadian Forces in 1995 with the rank of Captain in the Air Force. After retirement, he joined the Vancouver Island Military Museum Society as a front desk volunteer. In 1996, he took over the duties of workshop manager where he was responsible for mounting and framing military medals. Mr. Bird has since become a recognized authority on restoring and mounting military medals. He has repaired and/or replaced hundreds of medals for Veterans and their families throughout British Columbia and beyond. In 2006, after the Museum’s founder passed away, Mr. Bird took on the role of President in addition to his responsibilities as workshop manager. He volunteers more than 40 hours each week to the Museum. Mr. Bird represents the Museum on the Board of the United Services Institute of Nanaimo.
