A Veteran retired from the Canadian Forces who has served on several peacekeeping missions overseas, Mr. Phillips is presently Sgt- at Arms at Branch No. 107 of The Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) in Chase, British Columbia. He is a valued member of the Branch, where he has effectively applied his leadership skills to its administration. Mr. Phillips contacts and visits ill and shut-in Veterans on a regular basis, including those interned at the Kamloops Hospital, located some 45 minutes away from his home in Chase. Mr. Phillips' devotion to and care of Veterans extends to their spouses and dependants, always ensuring that their needs are appropriately met. Mr. Phillips also assists surviving spouses of deceased Veterans with bereavement issues. He is in charge of the Colour Party for all Veteran funerals and takes great care of the ceremonies' details. During the community's annual Christmas Hamper program, Mr. Phillips ensures that local families will not go without food or gifts and personally delivers the hampers to needy families. Mr. Phillips participates in commemorative activities and supervises the wreath laying during the November 11th ceremony. As a member of the Board of Directors for the Lions Club, he has volunteered his time in an exemplary manner to addressing the needs of those requiring financial assistance and support in the community. In recognition of his extraordinary dedication and hard work on behalf of his peers in Chase, Mr. Phillips won the 2002 Citizen of the Year Award.
