North Vancouver, British Columbia
Mr. Gulkison is a retired police chief and he has been a committed, dedicated, contributing and loyal member of the North Shore Veterans’ Council Canada for over 20 years. Due to Mr. Gulkison’s strong ties with the police community, attendance at Remembrance Day ceremonies has significantly increased since he joined the Council. He has helped to increase the Council’s financial well-being and has assisted in further increasing community awareness of Veterans and the Council by reaching out through fundraising events and education programs. Mr. Gulkison often canvasses the local business community to gather items for silent auctions, and after the auction he organizes appreciation events and invites all those who participated to attend. He is a major supporter and contributor to the annual North Shore Veterans’ Council Canada Remembrance Day student education program and he helps to set up for the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Victoria Park War Memorial Cenotaph as well as the reception which takes place at the J.P. Fell Armoury. Mr. Gulkison is the vice-president of the Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Ribbon Society Canada, which is dedicated to remembering police and peace officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. In 2011, Mr. Gulkison was asked by the Mayor of North Vancouver to represent the North Shore and Japanese Canadian Veterans when two Japanese destroyers sailed to North Vancouver for the First World War Canadian Japanese Volunteer Ceremony. He hosted the Japanese guests while they attended ceremonies at the war memorial cenotaphs in North Vancouver and Stanley Park. Mr. Gulkison’s continued efforts to assist Veterans have also included his creation of a set of numbered challenge coins, which will be made available to the public in exchange for a donation that will be given to Honour House.
