Terence Whitty

Ottawa, Ontario

Mr. Whitty is a retired Canadian Forces Veteran who served in the Canadian Army and in the reserves with the Canadian Grenadier Guards in Montreal. After his service in the militia, Mr. Whitty endeavoured to promote youth participation in the Army Cadets as a member of the Cadet Services of Canada (currently the Cadet Instructor Cadre). Most notably, he purchased a trophy cup that recognizes the most accomplished Army Cadet during the annual summer training at the Connaught Ranges. The trophy is presented to a Cadet in remembrance of a Second World War tank commander, Sergeant Samuel Moses (Moe) Hurwitz, who died of wounds in 1944 at a German military hospital in the Netherlands. In 2005, Mr. Whitty along with the Canadian War Museum and with significant cooperation from the Connaught Ranges and Primary Training Centre acquired a Sherman Tank as a memorial to the Second World War Veterans of the 22nd Canadian Armoured Regiment. The tank is now on display at the entrance to the Connaught Ranges. Mr. Whitty spends considerable time fundraising and to date he has raised more than $46,000 to fund the renovation of the Grenadier Guards Museum in Montréal to ensure that it will continue to tell the story of the Veterans who have served and continue to serve Canada worldwide.
