Vancouver, British Columbia
Mr. Matheson is a retired Canadian Forces Veteran, who works tirelessly to support disadvantaged Veterans. He is the Executive Director of the Veterans Memorial Manor, which provides safe and affordable housing to low income Veterans on Vancouver's lower East Side. The Manor's clientele includes younger Veterans as well as Second World War and Korea War Veterans. Through Mr. Matheson's direction and leadership, the Manor has developed strong working relationships with Veterans Affairs Canada and other governmental and non governmental agencies which offer services and benefits to the Veteran population. Although this is a salaried position, Mr. Matheson goes above and beyond his duties by beginning each day at the Manor at 4:00 a.m. to ensure smooth morning processes are conducted and to be available for early morning behavioural situations related to late night substance abuse incidents. Mr. Matheson's support of the department's Vancouver District Office Homeless Outreach Initiative has been a key factor in its success. He has welcomed departmental staff, painted and cleaned an office at no cost, provided the department with free reception and security and is an active referral source. Through the provision of stable housing, Mr. Matheson offers Veterans hope and the opportunity to engage with departmental case managers and partners such as the British Columbia Operational Stress Injury Clinic and the Operational Stress Injury Social Support program.
