Wayne Wannamaker

Whitehorse, Yukon

Mr. Wannamaker is a retired Canadian Forces Veteran who served in The Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. In the late 1960s, Mr. Wannamaker assisted a group of First World War Veterans 50th anniversary pilgrimage to battlefields in Europe. Following his military service, in 1988, Mr. Wannamaker assisted in forming Watson Lake Cadet Corps, where he was the Commanding Officer and remained Cadet Instructor Cadre (CIC) on the Supplementary Reserve List until his retirement in 2007. He was instrumental in influencing the Yukon Legislative Assembly to adopt special license plates for Veterans in the territory. Mr. Wannamaker then approached city hall and successfully lobbied to provide free parking in Whitehorse to any vehicles bearing the Veterans’ license plates. As part of the Year of the Veteran, Mr. Wannamaker convinced the Legislative Assembly to present a “poppy quarter” to all 189 Veterans in the Yukon at a commemorative ceremony. The coins were presented to the Veterans by their local member of the legislature. Mr. Wannamaker continues working toward the well-being of Veterans in the Yukon.
