Mr. Whalen is a retired Canadian Forces Veteran and a currently serving member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He has been assisting Veterans and their families in Canada, the United States and Great Britain for more than 15 years. Although quite busy with his police duties, Mr. Whalen has donated hundreds of hours of his time over the years assisting Veterans and the families of those killed in action. Putting his investigative skills to work, Mr. Whalen obtains as much information as he can about a Veteran who has passed away or who was killed in action. He then applies for the Veteran’s service record, where he spends hours deciphering information so he can provide family members with a biography of the Veteran’s service in a non-military language. Mr. Whalen has done this for families in Canada, the United States and Great Britain. He has also spent time updating information in the Canadian Virtual War Memorial found in the Veterans Affairs Canada Web site. In 2001, Mr. Whalen made contact with a Scottish Air Force Veteran, who served with many Canadian pilots during the Second World War. Mr. Whalen learned that only a handful of this Veteran’s squadron mates were still living, so he arranged for a final squadron reunion, in the spring of 2002, prior to the Scottish Veteran’s death.
