The Wallaceburg Cenotaph was erected in 1922 in Library Park on James Street. It was a gift from Captain James Wynard Steinhoff, the town's first mayor, to the memory of the local war dead of the First World War. Steinhoff was very sick when it was unveiled and died a few weeks later.
The stone statue is of a First World War soldier standing at attention. The base was added on years later. Additional names were added after the Second World War and Korean War. During the Second World War, munitions were made by Wallaceburg Brass & Iron Manufacturing Company and Schultz Die Casting Company. The brass industry was considered one of the three most important industries to the town’s growth.
Due to expansion at the library, on June 24, 1975, the cenotaph was moved by Mac Construction to Civic Square Park. The base platform was repaired in 1999 and additional names were added that had been previously overlooked.
The Rocks of Honour, a tribute to all the service men and women who served and returned from the First and Second World Wars, are also located here.
