This memorial plaque was erected by comrades of No. 5 Company, the Governor General's Foot Guards and dedicated to the memory of Corporal Cuthbert T. Thomas who was killed in action at Paardeberg, South Africa, on 27 February 1900. During the South African War the Governor General's Foot Guards contributed volunteers for the various Canadian contingents, mainly the 2nd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry.
