Baptized Joseph-René-Georges D’Artois. Son of Pierre-Alexis D’Artois, physician, and Lucrèce Bourassa (deceased in 1904), of Farnham, Missisquoi, Québec. His father never remarried.

Enlisted in the 22nd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, he arrived in Plymouth, England, on 29 May 1915 and Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France, on 15 September. He was killed in action on 17 August 1917 in the trenches of Cité Saint-Laurent on Hill 70 during the Battle of Lens, France.
