Photo of Ernest Hoyles
The E-103 War Graves Register for Lance Sergeant Ernest Hoyles shows that he was buried at Valley Cottages, trench map reference 28.I.23.c.9.6. This is the location of the Valley Cottages Cemetery which was destroyed in subsequent battles and the men are now remembered on the Special Memorials at the CWGC cemetery known as Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm). It would appear that an error was made and Ernest Hoyles name was not included in the list of those to be remembered on a Kipling Special Memorial at the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground. -

This is the location of the Valley Cottages Cemetery which was destroyed in subsequent battles and the men are now remembered on the Special Memorials at the CWGC cemetery known as Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm). Photo of ERNEST HOYLES
The front of the Circumstance of Death file for Lance Sergeant Ernest Hoyles notes that he was "Killed in Action" on 3 June 1916 during the attack in the vicinity of Mount Sorrel. He was serving with the 15th Canadian Infantry Battalion (48th Highlanders) at the time of his death. The reverse (or page 2) of the file notes he was buried in Valley Cottage Cemetery, in the immediate vicinity of where the 15th Battalion was on that date. His records show he is named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, however since his grave site was known and was destroyed in subsequent battles, he should be recorded on a Kipling Special Memorial. The Special Memorials for Valley Cottage Cemetery are currently at the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. -
