Son of John Hilson and Margaret Tebo, of Milton, Alton, Ontario.
Soon after his arrival in France, Frederick was part of a group of Anglophones who, 6 September 1918, were transferred by error to the 22nd Battalion. On the 14th of the same month, he was re-transferred to the 87th Battalion, an Anglophone unit, and two weeks later, he was reported missing in action.
