On a military form dated 1 February 1943, his father sated that his son was born in 1919 in Matapédia, Bonaventure, Québec.
His brother Richard Maxwell Irvine, service number G-22746, Royal Rifles of Canada, was made prisoner of war in Hong Kong and Japan; he survived the war.

Memorial
Rifleman GORDON IRVINE is one of 30 members of the Royal Rifles of Canada, Royal Canadian Infantry Corps who are commemorated on this panel of the Sai Wan Memorial. He was one of 290 Canadian soldiers killed during the defense of Hong Kong, from December 8th to December 25th, 1941. -
Inscription
Dedicatory inscription of the SAI WAN MEMORIAL. This memorial bears the names of more than 2,000 Commonwealth servicemen, including 228 Canadians. -
Newspaper clipping
Rifleman GORDON IRVINE was reported Killed in Action in the Canadian Army's 242th overseas casualty list of the war published in the Globe and Mail on January 8, 1943. This casualty list also contains the name of CRANDEL IRVINE of Mann Settlement, Quebec. Gordon was the son of William H. and Lillian Irvine, while Crandel was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Irvine, all of Mann Settlement, Quebec, so they may have been cousins. -
