P/O. McLaughlin was Air Gunner on Lancaster ND 868 with 106 (RAF) Squadron. The mission on September 23/24, 1944, was to bomb the Dortmund-Ems canal. On 23 Sept 44, the crew were airborne 1930 from their home base in Metheringham, Lincolnshire, and crashed around 2245 near Schierloh, where the crew was buried in a field. Of the 136 Lancasters on the raid, 14 were lost, or more than 10 per cent.
F/L S. H. Jones was taken Prisoner of War. The other crew members, with F/S McLaughlin, were exhumed and reburied in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany. They are:
P/O (BA) Henry Shepherd, age 21, from Toronto;
F/O (N) Gerald G. Bryan, age 23, from Lockwood, Sask.
F/Sgt. (AG) John F. Clarke, age 22, from Vancouver; and 3 RAF crew:
F/O (P) James Isaac, age 31; Sgt. (FE) David Levene, age 36;
Sgt. (WAG) Richard H. Julian, age 21.

REICHSWALD FOREST WAR CEMETERY Germany
The REICHSWALD FOREST WAR CEMETERY is located 5 km south west of Kleve. From Kleve the cemetery is located, using the Hoffmannallee from the Town Centre, which becomes the Materbornerallee. This road enters Reichswald Forest and becomes the Grunewaldstrasse. Follow direction Gennep, entering Reichswald Forest the cemetery is situated 500 metres on the left.
Alternatively from the motorway 57, take exit Kleve/Goch, which leads onto the 9 N road in the direction towards Kleve. After 3 km turn left on to the 504 direction Kranenburg. Reichswald cemetery is clearly signposted on the 504 at cross roads Grunewald. REICHSWALD FOREST WAR CEMETERY is situated on the Grunewald Strasse direction Kleve on the right, 3 km from cross roads Grunewald.
