He was killed in action on 15 December 1944 during an assault on the Fosso Vetro Canal, between the Lamone and Bagnacavallo Rivers. He was initially buried in the regiment's cemetery northwest of Russi, on the road to Ravenna, in Grave 25. VILLANOVA CANADIAN WAR CEMETERY Italy
Villanova lies in the Commune of Bagnacavallo in the Province of Ravenna, and is typical of the agricultural villages of the low lying Romagna plain.
Take Highway A14, Bologna-Taranto, and branch off at Imola following the direction of Ravenna. Villanova is 3 kilometres south-west of the main road from Ferrara to Ravenna (Route No.16) at Via Chiesa. If approaching from Ferrara, leave the main road by turning right on the outskirts of the village of Mezzano. If approaching from Ravenna, the visitor should turn left immediately after crossing the bridge over the River Lamone. Proceeding south-west from Mezzano the road runs parallel to the River Lamone until reaching Villanova. The visitor should bear right across the village square and leave it at the far corner by the road leading to the Villanova Canadian War Cemetery.
The cemetery is permanently open and may be visited outside the working hours of the local gardening staff, but will be unmanned.
