Son of William Davidson and Ida Mary Duncan, of Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, Scotland.

During the First World War, William was killed in action in the Dardanelles on 3 June 1915 in the Cape Helles area of Canakkale, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, while serving with the Benbow Battalion Royal Naval Division of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. He was an Able Seaman, serial number Z-1740.

At 0:15 am on 29 October 1942, the Bic Island was torpedoed and sunk by U-224 southwest of Rockall, an isolated rock between Ireland and Iceland, position 55°05'N/23°27'W.
