In September 1942, the John A. Holloway undertook a crossing with convoy GAT-2, linking Mobile, Alabama, Key West, Florida, Guantanamo, Cuba and Trinidad. On 6 September, at 22:27, she was torpedoed and sunk by U-164 north of Gallinas Punta, Colombia, position 14°10'N/71°30'W. One sailor, Davis, lost his life. The captain and 22 crew members were rescued and landed at Santa Maria, Colombia, on the 12th.
