On 2 October 1941, the Hatasu was en route from Manchester, England, to New York with convoy ON-19. Away from the other ships, at 11:45 pm, she was torpedoed by U-431 540 miles (869 km) north-east of Cape Race, Newfoundland. The Hatasu's gunners fired on the submersible. The ship broke in two and sank at 12:28 am on the 3rd, after receiving a coup de grâce in position 51°33'N/41°35'W. Seven sailors were rescued on 16 October by the US destroyer USS Charles F.
