Son of John Lawrence Ruxton and Mary Elizabeth McCoard from Glasgow, Scotlant. Husband of Doris Roberta Emmeline Mackley from Hackney, London, England. Father of Donald Carfrae Ruxton.

During the First World War, he enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps in Springboig, Shettleston, Scotland. He was only 15 years and 3 months old.

On 26 March 1941, north-west of the Scottish coast, the Empire Mermaid was torpedoed by German aircraft and bombed on 27 March in position 58°36'N/10°00'W, killing 19 sailors and injuring 4 others. She sank on 28 in the North Atlantic, position 57°33'N/12°43'W.
