The Fort Mumford was torpedoed on her maiden voyage from Vancouver via Lyttleton, New Zealand, to Aden by Japanese submarine I27. The crew abandoned ship but LCdr Fukumura complied with the Imperial "disposal" policy concerning PoWs and ordered the slaughter of the crewmen by machine-gun fire.
