On 13 June 1941, the Djurdjura was sailing with convoy SL-76 when she was torpedoed by the Italian submarine Benedetto on her way to Oban, Scotland. She sank with her captain and 33 crew members in position 38°40'N/24°00'W. Sansom died of his injuries on the 24th.
