Son of Onésime Cusson and Elmire Leclerc, of Montréal, Québec. Husband of Margaret Rooney, of Blackley, Lancashire, England.

He enlisted on 6 May 1915 with the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles in Montreal, Quebec, regimental number 5595, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was discharged for medical reasons on 1 June 1915 at Camp Valcartier, Quebec.

Requisitioned by the British Admiralty, SS Royal Edward became HMT Royal Edward and was converted into a troop transport. While en route to Gallipoli, Turkey, with about 1,335 British troops, she was torpedoed by UB-14 6 miles (9.5 km) west of the Aegean island of Kandeloussa and sank with 866 men, position 36°31'N/25°51'E.
