Let’s remember and recognize

Gandy the dog

Howdy! I am Gandy the dog. They say that dogs are people’s best friends. I love that saying!

Dogs have served with humans during wars. One place where Canadian Armed Forces members had dogs was Afghanistan. Dogs have sensitive noses. They helped find dangerous explosives. They also saved human lives.

I was at a solemn ceremony in March. People were there to remember and recognize Canadians who served in Afghanistan. The mission lasted from 2001 to 2014. More than 40,000 members of Canada’s military took part. Sadly, 158 of them died.

The Canadian Armed Forces members wore poppies on their uniforms at the ceremony. The Veterans and guests wore poppies on their jackets. When you wear a poppy, you remember someone who served and died in the military.

After the ceremony, I saw school children give cards to Veterans. I also saw adults shake hands with them. These are ways you can recognize a person who protected peace and freedom.

Remembrance Day is on November 11. How will you remember and recognize someone who served?
