Be a Journalist

Have students write an article about local wartime stories. They may find information by:

  • Talking to their parents, grandparents, other relatives, neighbours or Veterans within their community.
  • Going to their community library and newspaper and searching through their archives for papers from the war years.
  • Visiting local nursing homes to see if they might be able to speak with a Veteran who resides there.
  • Using on-line resources like Library and Archives Canada, the Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Virtual War Memorial (if the person they are searching for died in service)
  • Searching for artifacts, such as old letters, pictures, mementos, or other personal items that may have been saved.

Have students learn about the story behind the item or from the Veteran or individuals. They could take photos and include them in their stories.

This activity is an ideal opportunity to include those students who have family experiences from other countries.

One way to honour the stories from each student is to create a collection of the stories and offer it to the school library. Post stories on your school Web site, or have your students share their stories through social media.
