Today's Sunset Flag Lowering Ceremony is dedicated to paying tribute to the fallen members of the Canadian Army who served as early as 1899 in the South African War to as recently as in Afghanistan and other NATO or UN operations. Over 7,000 Canadians, including 12 women nurses, served in the South African War (1899-1902), with approximately 270 losing their lives. Since that time, more than 100,000 Canadian military personnel have fallen in foreign wars, including the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, Afghanistan and various NATO or UN operations.

Participants and invited guests:

Each evening cadets, scouts, guides, etc. are invited and scheduled to perform the flag lowering detail. The sunset ceremonies also include choirs, buglers, pipers, flag detail, uniformed members of the community, including Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Police Services, EMS, Alberta Sheriffs and Military Members. Invited guests include civic, provincial, federal government officials, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Governor General of Canada, Consul Generals, uniformed members of the community, Veterans, community leaders and members of the public.

After the ceremony, members of the public are welcome to walk amongst the crosses all night long and into the morning dawn.
