The Royal Canadian Legion Memorial is dedicated to all Canadian War Veterans and was unveiled on May 1, 2004. There was a full Colour Guard and Parade ceremony attended by Legion officials and the Mayor.
The Legion wanted to have its own memorial where parades could be held other than at the Barrie downtown Cenotaph where the Remembrance Day Ceremony is held. The Barrie Legion holds ceremonies/parades to remember VE Day, D-Day and Vimy Day and did not want the City of Barrie to close the downtown streets on more than one occasion each year.
It was important to Branch 147 Members that the emblems of the Barrie Police and Barrie Fire Services were included on memorial as the loss in 2002 of Firefighter Bill Wilkins while on duty had touched the citizens of Barrie in a major way and the Legion wanted to have a place where the Barrie Police and Firefighters could hold special memorials as well.
