Son of Robert Eavis and Louisa Janes, of Ramea, Newfoundland.
Nephew of Thomas F. Janes, of Ramea.
His brother, Seaman Thomas Eavis, and his cousin, Seaman Alfred Eavis, also lost their lives when the schooner sank.
The Douglas Haig sailed from St. John's, Newfoundland, for Alicante, Spain, and was reported missing on February 1, 1917. Neither the ship nor the five crew members were seen again. No German warship has claimed to have sunk her.
