Baptized Joseph-David-Irénée Gauthier.

Son of Joseph-Victor Gauthier (deceased in 1919) and Clara Lanthier (deceased in 1918), of Ottawa, Ontario.

He stated being born in Ottawa in 1888 when he enlisted.

Enlisted in the 41st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he embarked from Montreal, Quebec, for Great Britain on October 16, 1915, and landed in Plymouth, England, on the 28th. On May 1, 1916, he joined the 23rd Battalion in West Sandling, and on July 13 of the same year, he joined the 69th Reserve Battalion stationed at Camp Dibgate in Shorncliffe. On January 4, 1917, he was incorporated into the 10th Reserve Battalion based in Shoreham, and on the 19th, he was awarded the Good Conduct Badge. On April 17, 1917, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion, also based in Shoreham. On the 18th, he left for France, arriving in Le Havre, Normandy, the same day. On the 30th, he joined his new unit, which was resting in the Arras sector of Pas-de-Calais. On August 15, 1918, he was reported wounded in action during the capture of Hill 70 in Lens. He was found safe and sound on the 23rd at base camp. He was killed in action on August 28, 1918, during the Battle of Chérisy, Pas-de-Calais.

Wancourt is a village about 8 kilometres south-east of Arras. It is 2 kilometres south of the main road from Arras to Cambrai. The WANCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY is a short distance south-east of the village just off the D 35 road.
